THIS IS REALLY DISORGANIZED/THROWN TOGETHER, maybe we should have entries for specific things? Like list of supplies/things to bring in one, attractions/places we want to see in another. Just an idea, wasn't sure if i should make a new entry or add on to the existing list? Heres some more stuff I came up with:
-any vaccines/health precautions to take while traveling to NZ (if any) - according to http://www.netdoctor.co.uk/travel/austr alasia/new_zealand.shtml nothing is necessary that we dont already have, and we're not at risk for malaria!
http://www.who.int/countries/nzl/en/ is SUPER helpful and covers lots of aspects of the country, theres a pdf file on potential risks for travelers. A wealth of info.
-any poisonous spiders/snakes/fish/jellyfish, etc we may encounter during our stay in NZ? a quick search turned up this: "The only poisonous animal native to New Zealand is the katipo, a red-black spider, one of the deadliest spiders in the world. There are no snakes native to New Zealand."
-at what point do visas become necessary? preliminary searches look like up to a three month long stay = no visa necessary
is this something we might be interested in getting? ($$$ how costly are they?)
-whats it like moving about the country as a traveler? cost, whats the public transportation system like? etc. Lonely PLanet, Globe Trekker videos
-hospitals! where are the major ones? which ones are the best? where would we want to be taken if something were to happen.
-check out tourism bureau/dept of tourism information website, have info sent to us
-MAPS, MAPS, MAPS!
-Things to have: comfortable sneakers, hiking boots and a good hat, small medicine/first aid kit
-cell phone useage/service/options!!! would be awesome to not be stuck somewhere without a way to get help and also necessary for contacting future and potential hosts, you know?
Google found this: "Unlike the USA but like most of the rest of the world, New Zealand has the GSM cellular system. This means that your wisest choice in cell phone coverage while visiting New Zealand is in obtaining a pre-paid SIM card or plan from a service provider."
-http://www.gapyear-newzealand.co.uk/ check this site out, lots of good basic info. Some of this, like visas, may be different for us as US citizens (vs UK citizens), but it talks about transportation and a plethora of other awesome things about NZ.
I'm sure a lot/all of this will be covered in travel guides... We gotta raid the libraries!
